The Death of “Eternal Victory”

Yet another good one bites the dust at the hands of the shadowy forces of death in Bangladesh. Blogger Ananta Bijoy Das, who like Avjit Roy was also part of the Mukto Mona collective, was hacked to death in Sylhet by masked killers yesterday. His first two names “Ananta Bijoy” means “Eternal Victory” in Bengali. Surely the most cruel irony.
Of the three “atheist” bloggers killed this year, two were from Hindu background (Avijit Roy and Ananta Bijoy Das). In a Muslim-majority country, where Hindus make up a minority of less than 8 or 9 percent (and this number is falling precipitously), one has to wonder why in the statistics of victims of free-speech Hindus fare so prominently.
